A lovely Scottish pebble brooch with a snowflake shape. Many-colored agates are set in layers of sterling silver, like a kaleidoscope. The bottom layer is a ring of agate triangles framed in engraved scalloped silver. The top layer is a six-rayed star of diamond-shaped agates set in engraved silver. Bloodstone, tigers eye, banded agate, and chalcedony stones are bright and colorful. This beautiful brooch is finished with the pin and c-clasp common to this era. Circa 1850.
Scottish pebble jewelry is one of our favorite categories of Victorian jewels. It evokes the image of Queen Victoria and her love of Scotland and all things Scottish. Once the fashionable English ladies see their lovely young Queen wearing her Scottish jewels, Scottish pebble jewels become all the rage and continue to be worn throughout Victoria's reign.
